We talked about the concept of antioxidants in phase 12, and the main enemy of antioxidants is free radicals, so how exactly do free radicals harm our health? Why do we need to reomove free radicals?
Free radicals, also known as "free group" in chemistry, refers to the atoms or groups with unpaired electrons formed by the covalent bond of the molecule of a compound under external conditions such as light and heat. Since electrons must come in pairs in a bond when atoms form molecules, free radicals go around snatping an electron from something else to form themselves into a stable substance. In chemistry, this phenomenon is called oxidation.
Free radicals are linked to our health because of their strong oxidative capacity, which can damage our cells and, in severe cases, attack DNA mitochondria. The imbalance between free radicals and their ability to scavenge them can lead to a variety of potential hazards and diseases.
SOD is famous in China. Thanks to the TV advertisement of a famous skin care product, SOD is a natural free radical scavenger. However, the content of SOD decreases gradually after the age of 30. So, the big health trend of ingredients with antioxidant properties into the view of public, generally cover the vitamin C, hydroxytyrosol, tea polyphenols, lycopene, vitamin E, resveratrol and so on.
